What is At-Will Employment? | Legacy Law Firm

Written by Legacy Law Firm | Jul 11, 2024 2:02:27 PM

At-will means that an employer can terminate an employee at any time, for any reason, without legal liability unless such termination is based on illegal discrimination. Employees can also leave a job at any time, for any reasons, without legal consequences.

By contrast, an employment contract may provide specific terms and conditions of employment. Each party is held to the terms of the contract. Sometimes, an employer unintentionally creates an implied contract by making promises to employees, or including certain contractual provisions in the employee handbook.

At Legacy Law Firm, our attorneys will review policies and handbooks to ensure an employer has not created an implied contract. We also assist employers in creating employment contracts when such contract is preferred.
